You are currently viewing NFTs: the hype around Solana and news about Sandbox and the Bored Apes

After the endorsement of NFTs on Solana by the famous American comedian Steve Harvey, there have been other pieces of news regarding this blockchain that aims to become Ethereum’s biggest competitor, at least as far as the world of non-fungible tokens is concerned.

DeFi Land, the new NFT project on Solana

Also today, news broke that the DeFi Land project has raised over $4 million to launch its platform on Solana. Among the investors involved in this round are leaders in the world of blockchain gaming such as Animoca Brands, Alameda Research, Jump Capital, NGC Ventures, Solana Foundation and the exchange Gate.io.

DeFi Game is a game similar to Farmville, where the user has to build and maintain their own agricultural field, paying and receiving rewards. The NFT sector is therefore expanding to other blockchains, perhaps due in part to Ethereum’s ever-higher fees, which reached over 1000 gwei last Tuesday.

NFTs of a Bored Ape arrives on Sandbox

One of the world’s best-known metaverse, The Sandbox, today decided to purchase a collectible from the Bored Ape series for the staggering sum of almost $3 million, or $740 Ethereum.

The Bored Ape purchased is the so-called “The Captain” with the laser eyes, number 3749.

It is one of the rarest Bored Apes, as explained in the thread started by The Sandbox team on Twitter:

“Bored Ape #3749 aka “The Captain” is a perfect example of why NFTs are the intersection of scarcity, art, and gaming. A six trait gold fur ape with a sea captain’s hat, a black t-shirt, and of course laser eyes. Based on these traits, Bored Ape #3749 is the 27th rarest ape”.

The reason for this purchase is surely to be found in the industry’s growing interest in collectibles, of which CryptoPunks are the progenitors.

A Bored Ape landed on The Sandbox

In general, The Sandbox had long invested in several NFTs, including Pudgy Penguins, Meebits, World of Women, Art Blocks, and game tools such as Axie Infinity and Zed Run.

The Sandbox’s COO, Sebastien Borget, explained that the company wants to contribute to the growth of the NFT ecosystem:

“We see The Sandbox contributing to the growth of the NFT and metaverse ecosystems, supporting creators inside and outside of our gaming virtual world, and adding value to NFTs by giving them increased utility through avatar interoperability and showcasing them within experiences across The Sandbox”, Decrypt reported.

The Bored Apes and the collectible phenomenon

Until a few months ago the big NFT phenomenon was centred around art and so-called Crypto Art, whereas now it seems that the focus has shifted to the collectible sector.

Large numbers are now being created around these collectible pictures (often of dubious artistic value) which in the past month have set new records for the NFT market which has come to sell over 2 billion dollars of which more than half relate to collectibles alone.
