An auction will take place tonight at 10:22 PM (CET), during which an NFT from Banksy’s famous work “Spike” will be put up for sale.

The auction will be held on the platform of Valuart, a startup that creates NFTs derived from original artworks and will be the first auction of its kind hosted by the platform.

Valuart is a Lugano-based company founded in 2021 by three cryptocurrency enthusiasts, Vittorio Grigòlo, Michele Fiscalini and Etan Genini, with the aim of helping artists increase the value of their works. The aim is to connect art collectors and artists, creating new revenue opportunities through the creation of NFTs of artworks, and the marketing of the digital rights to them.

The auction will close on 29 July, with 50% of the proceeds going to charity, supporting organizations working to help victims of conflict globally.

The NFT that will be auctioned, “SPIKE – A Unique Artwork by BANKSY (NFT)”, is a video in which Banksy’s Spike has been recreated in CGI (computer-generated imagery) and floats through the universe, then passes through the Earth’s atmosphere until it crashes into the Dead Sea, returning to its rightful place on Earth where once resurfaced, it will continue to rotate, suspended in the void.

Spike’s NFT is more than just a digital reproduction of the original work because it includes both visual and musical art. In fact, the video is accompanied by an aria performed by tenor Vittorio Grigòlo.

Today’s auction is the first in a series of NFT auctions. Valuart is in the process of concluding new partnerships with representatives from the art and design world to breathe new life into artworks, historical sites and artefacts to enable collectors of digital works to acquire unique pieces.

The next NFT, for example, will be dedicated to the mantle and stole worn by Pope John Paul II for the 2000 Jubilee, on the night of 24 December 1999, when he opened the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica. This is the so-called ‘Manto Giubilare’, made by Stefano Zanella, a piece of history, but also an example of high craftsmanship in Prato.

Vittorio Grigòlo, a world-famous tenor and co-founder of Valuart, one of the first to have contributed to an NFT artwork, said:

“I am thrilled to be able to be part of the Valuart project and to have contributed to the rebirth of such an extraordinary work of art as Spike by providing my own performance for the creation of this NFT. I have entered the metaverse for the first time where I am perfectly at ease and where I foresee the perfect environment to pursue memorable projects”.
