On Monday 6 September, the Italian contemporary artist Federico Clapis sold his latest work in digital format, in the form of an NFT, for around 70,000 euros.

The title of the work is “Tank Fish” and is a digital representation of the plastic sculpture that was actually created by the artist in 2018 for an environmental awareness project.

Federico Clapis and the NFT to support the environmental cause

This tank, which from its shape resembles a fish, was abandoned at sea in free sailing for seven days and Clapis through a video message invited all his fans, but also environmental activists and supporters of the cause to retrieve the Tank Fish.

The message was clear: bring plastic back to earth. The new sea creature, which is a metaphor for the current state of our oceans, had been connected to a GPS so that it could always be tracked, follow its movements and be easily found.

The Tank Fish project has been appreciated by various international media which have told the story of the Italian artist and conveyed his message of plastic-free, drawing attention to an increasingly important issue which is the consumption and waste of plastic and non-recyclable materials.

On the other hand, the new digital interpretation designed and created by the sculptor shows us the work as if the “tank fish” in the future would come to life and become a protected species, representing a sign of the archaeology of our times.

The Tank Fish non-fungible token (NFT) was purchased for 21.58 ETH by Paolo Barberis, founder of the multinational Dada operating in the domain and professional hosting sector and advisor for Innovation to the Prime Minister since 2014.

Barberis was also one of the first supporters of the physical project launched 3 years ago by the artist against the pollution caused by plastic that constantly endangers the marine ecosystem.

Clapis’s NFT was sold on SuperRare

How does SuperRare work for selling NFTs

The NFT work was sold by Federico Clapis on the SuperRare website, a marketplace for collecting and exchanging unique and exclusive digital artworks that are authentically created by an artist on the network and tokenized as a digital crypto-collectible.

SuperRare is built on the Ethereum network, accepts only Ether (ETH) as a means of payment and has a 3% transaction fee per purchase.

Federico Clapis is considered to be one of the leading artists and exponents of this new and radical art form, helping to understand what NFTs are, to understand their value through his art and to re-evaluate the meaning and difference between an object and an asset.
