Time magazine has compiled a list of the 100 most influential people of 2021.
The big names include Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
The categories with the most influential people of the year
Traditionally, there are five categories into which the various personalities are placed:
- leaders and revolutionaries,
- titans,
- artists and entertainers,
- scientists and icons,
- innovators.
Each of these sections usually features 20 names of individuals or groups of people who, in the eyes of the magazine, have been able to change the world, either positively or negatively.
The captains of the five teams this year are almost all women, a strong sign of innovation in the logic of equal opportunities on a global level.
Buterin and Musk were included in the section of the most influential innovators of 2021 thanks to all their projects and ideas: these recognitions mark a clear openness on the part of the American weekly towards the crypto universe and its players.
For some time now, Time magazine has also been immersing itself in this world by creating three NFTs inspired by historical covers. In April, the magazine further integrated cryptocurrencies by announcing that it would accept crypto payments for digital subscriptions.
Vitalik Buterin, creator of the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, was praised by Time for his ability to empower other creators with his continued support for Ethereum, making and exploiting new tools and digital assets such as non-fungible tokens or smart contracts.
Ethereum has become the blockchain of choice for the creation of smart contracts, as unlike Bitcoin it is not solely a network for transferring value but a network for running specific contracts.
How Ethereum ranked for design innovation according to Ohanian
All the people on the list are introduced by other familiar faces: Buterin, for example, was introduced by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who highlighted the young programmer’s role in the growth of Ethereum and beyond.
Ohanian continues his review by referring to some important projects in the Ethereum ecosystem that were developed thanks to the idea of a person who originated new ways of harnessing blockchain technology.
On these innovations he stated:
“Whether it’s startups like Sorare reinventing fantasy sports or Rainbow users showing off their NFT collections, none of this would’ve existed without Vitalik’s creation. I’ve never been more excited about the potential of the Internet, and that’s largely thanks to Vitalik Buterin”.
In addition, Time also featured the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, who led his country to be the first in the world to make Bitcoin legal tender.
Among the political leaders are Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump and Chinese Head of State Xi Jinping.
The only Italian recognized as one of the most influential personalities in the world, as well as a symbol of finance that works closely with politics, is Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who is included for the third time in the list compiled by Time, recalling in 2013 when he was on the cover with his famous slogan “Whatever it takes”.
