The mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, has said he is volunteering to be the first US politician to receive a salary in Bitcoin.
The statement came publicly on the social network of crypto-lovers Twitter, in response to a tweet from renowned investor Anthony Pompliano.
The mayor of Miami and the first “politician’s” salary in Bitcoin
A couple of days ago, on Twitter, Pompliano had asked who was the first US politician to receive a salary in Bitcoin and, unexpectedly, Francis Suarez came forward and confirmed his willingness. Here are the tweets:
I’m going to take my next paycheck 100% in bitcoin…problem solved! @Sarasti can you help? https://t.co/v4YdPZ0tYc
— Mayor Francis Suarez (@FrancisSuarez) November 2, 2021
Pomp: It is time. Who is going to be the first American politician to accept their salary in bitcoin?
Suarez: I’m going to take my next paycheck 100% in bitcoin…problem solved! Sarasti can you help?
To make this a reality, Suarez called in the City of Miami’s CIO, Director of Innovation and Technology, Mike Sarasti.
Very quick and substantive, here’s how Sarasti then responded:
Already sent over @ln_strike link to register. My experience receiving a portion of my pay last week went flawlessly. And the Mayor already scaling my “pilot” to 100% allocation. Boss move.
Suarez and salaries in BTC
While for US political figures receiving their salaries in Bitcoin would be a novelty, in the field of sport, the practice has already been active for some time.
The latest to join the club of players deciding to convert part of their salary into BTC is Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL).
Two days ago, he also made the news public with a Tweet, describing that he and Cash App will be converting a percentage of his earnings into BTC.
Miami as the world’s 2021 crypto hub
With his openness to the crypto world, Suarez inaugurated “Bitcoin 2021” in Miami, as opposed to letting it take place in Los Angeles as usual, so as to involve his citizens.
Not only that, the city of Miami is also considering the administrative option of paying municipal employees in Bitcoin. Of course, now that Suarez himself will prove that he receives his salary in BTC, he may also make this a reality for employees.
At the moment, the priority would be to popularize the crypto topic to the citizens of Miami, so that the necessary legislation can then follow. Suarez, could become the Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, who as of September 7, 2021, managed to get the proper approvals to make Bitcoin legal tender in the country.
