The mayor of Tampa Bay in Florida, Jane Castor, has announced plans to accept her paycheck in Bitcoin. This development comes a few weeks after the mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, stated that he would receive 100% of his next paycheck in Bitcoin.
Castor made the remarks during the Bitcoin & Blockchain Summit held in Florida. Those who attended the summit stated that the mayor would partner with the Celsius Network to facilitate the Bitcoin payments.
News create a buzz in the crypto sector
The news about the mayor accepting Bitcoin payments created much excitement across the crypto sector. One of the major Bitcoin advocates, Anthony Pompliano, stated that the acceptance of Bitcoin by political figureheads was fast picking pace.
“Another mayor has decided to take their salary in bitcoin. The running count is now 4 mayors across the United States this week. Tag your mayor and ask them if they are bitcoin-friendly,” the tweet read.
The news of Castor accepting Bitcoin comes at a time when Bitcoin is enjoying immense price gains. The primary cryptocurrency is now trading at the highs of above $60K, and last month, it reached record-high levels of $67K.
The price gains made by Bitcoin have been associated with the growing adoption of the coin by regulators and financial institutions. It has also become a major currency used by merchants and online payment processing firms.
Following in the footsteps of Suarez
The decision made by Castor seems to step from a similar decision made by Francis Suarez, the mayor of Miami. Suarez stated that he would receive his next salary in Bitcoin.
Besides Suarez, the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, also stated that he would accept Bitcoin. He noted that he would receive his next three paychecks in Bitcoin.
Suarez and Adams are two major crypto supporters. Adams was newly elected as the mayor of New York, and he stated that he was working to make the city a major cryptocurrency hub.
“In New York, we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in Bitcoin when I become mayor. NYC is going to be the centre of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!” the tweet read.
