MetaMask and WalletConnect on Discord, tests underway
It all stems from a tweet by Packy McCormick in which he imagined a space built for gamers, a kind of home for all those who play the Great Online Game, with 150 million average monthly users and generating $130 million in revenue.
The reference to Discord is obvious, as evidenced by the link McCormick added to a lengthy post on his blog.
In this post, at one point McCormick explicitly imagines that any Discord account integrates a wallet for cryptocurrencies, particularly Ethereum and Solana.
At this point, Citron’s response was more than explanatory, as he posted a screenshot of what appears to be a test integration of a Discord account with MetaMask and WalletConnect.
In a subsequent tweet, Citron described this experiment explicitly as a pre-release of what at this point could be described as a feature currently being tested on the platform.
No other information is known, such as the timing or outcome of the tests.
However, it is possible to assume that the company is really serious, because the integration of MetaMask on Discord could be very useful for further developments.
One of the hypotheses circulating is that of future integration with play-to-earn games, or with NFTs used within digital games.
Reactions
The news has not been taken well by all Discord fans, both because the fees on Ethereum are still high and because some have expressed disappointment with the integration with cryptocurrencies.
However, it is hard to imagine that such an integration would cause more harm than good. On the contrary, the potential it opens up appears to be immense, especially in view of further development of Ethereum-based services in the future, especially when Proof-of-Stake is introduced, which will make transactions much cheaper.
Discord and Ethereum, a de facto union
The curious thing is that Discord was born in 2015, the same year as Ethereum, and it is a platform that is already very much in use in the crypto sector. It even seems strange that integration with Ethereum has not yet been introduced to date, and once added it could lend itself quite well to considerable developments.
The online gaming world has already been using cryptocurrencies and tokens for a long time and is therefore very fertile ground for the spread of these technologies.
