Matt Damon starred in a commercial sponsored by Crypto.com, which aired at the end of October. Only now, many are criticizing the key phrase said by the Oscar nominee: “Fortune favours the bold”, referring to cryptocurrency investors.

Matt Damon stars in Crypto.com trend spot

US actor Matt Damon stars in Crypto.com’s trendy ad. Damon acted out his script, stepping into the role of a motivational influencer, just like in the world of football, Formula 1 and UFC (mixed martial arts), sectors in which Crypto.com is involved as a sponsor.

Of course, looking at the video, this strong motivation that is meant to lead to a “victory” in the various competitions, has instead been equated to a “victory” in human evolution.

And indeed, in the commercial, Damon compares cryptocurrency investors to Arctic explorers, the Wright brothers and astronauts. The commercial ends with a catchy phrase: “Fortune favours the bold”, although this phrase has been criticized by famous media figures.

Criticism of Matt Damon

Adam Johnson, host of the podcast Citations Needed, is among the first to share his dissatisfaction with Matt Damon’s commercial. Only yesterday, he tweeted as follows:

“Saddest thing about Matt Damon’s macho-baiting crypto pitch where the viewer must ACT NOW or he’s a weak pussy is that this is a top 3 classic pitch all financial schemes have used to goad men into forking over their paltry savings. Nothing has changed in 150 years”.

Even Guardian writer Carole Cadwalladr compared Crypto.com to a Ponzi scheme. Here is her completely negative comment on Twitter:

“There isn’t enough yuck in the world to describe Matt Damon advertising a Ponzi scheme”.

Edward Ongweso JR., a New York City-based reporter in jobs and technology commented:

“This is worse than the fucking car commercials”.

Crypto.com, the unconvincing ranking on CoinMarketCap

In addition to the present criticism against Crypto.com, last week CoinMarketCap also downgraded the cryptocurrency exchange to 16th place in its ranking of exchanges.

This was echoed by Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek, who pointed out that CoinMarketCap was unconvincing, as Crypto.com’s position on Coingecko remained in 2nd place

At the time of writing, Crypto.com is in 12th position on CoinMarketCap while on Coingecko it has dropped to 4th position.
