After two years without playing due to rehab, Klay Thompson definitely seems to be back on the court with a different perspective on his salary. In fact, Thompson is choosing the queen of crypto, Bitcoin, calling it the future of money.
His teammate, Andre Iguodala, is also following the movement, sharing it on the social network of crypto-lovers, Twitter:
I’m excited to announce I’m taking part of my salary in BITCOIN w. Cash App! Bitcoin is the future, @klaythompson and I are both believers. To make bitcoin more accessible, we’re giving out $1M in bitcoin back to fans today. Drop your $cashtag w. #PaidInBitcoin & follow @CashApp

Bitcoin salary for sports professionals
Thompson and Iguodala have joined the sports professionals who are choosing to collect some or all of their salary in BTC.
In fact, in basketball alone, the Sacramento Kings of the California NBA announced last spring that they were offering all employees and players the option of paying their salaries in BTC. Then, in the summer, the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) also approved the system of paying a portion of salaries in Bitcoin for its players.
Instead of Cash App, the CEBL is playing on home turf, choosing BitBuy, Canada’s leading crypto platform, as its partnership.
Switching sports but staying in the US like Thompson and Iguodala, the National Football League (NFL) has seen numerous players succumb to the allure of cryptocurrencies. Last November alone, Aaron Rodger, the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, and Odell Beckham of the Los Angeles Rams, said they were converting part of their salaries into BTC with Cash App.
BTC salaries on the rise
In 2021, BTC salaries have become increasingly attractive not only in the world of sports but also in other sectors, confirming a general trend of preferring the risk of the volatility of crypto prices, rather than a continuous decrease in the purchasing power of one’s salary, i.e. inflation.
It is estimated that inflation has been rising so fast over the past year that, in the US, the government has called for a cost-of-living increase of almost 6%. This has led to politicians themselves starting to say that they want to receive part of their salary or all of it in BTC.
The mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, and the mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, were the first to share their agreement to receive even 100% of their salary in BTC rather than fiat currency.
