The two are coming together to create video games with elements of blockchain technology, such as NFTs.
PUBG Creator Hops On To Solana
The partnership announcement came from Krafton, which is a billion-dollar South Korean gaming company that developed the popular PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS game. Other than creating these blockchain-based games, the two companies will also collaborate on the marketing and designing of the games along with other blockchain technologies. They also will be jointly exploring investment opportunities.
The Head of Krafton’s Web 3.0 team, Hyungchul Park said,
“KRAFTON will continuously see ways to work closely with blockchain companies like Solana Labs as we work toward establishing our Web 3.0 ecosystem. As one of the best global high-performance blockchain with strength in high speed and low fees, Solana represents the best of the Web 3.0 ecosystem and its technologies. Through this cooperation, KRAFTON will acquire the insight needed to accelerate its investment in and output of blockchain-based experiences.”
Krafton Eager To Enter Web3
Traditional video game companies have been including NFTs and other blockchain elements in their gameplay to mark their territory in the metaverse and Web3. As the creator of the wildly popular PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS and PUBG: NEW STATE, Krafton is also not willing to be left behind. Just last month, the gaming giant announced that it is looking to enter Web 3.0 by incorporating NFT elements into its game development. Since then, the company has been exploring investment and partnership opportunities with other companies working in NFTs, metaverse, and blockchain. Some of these companies that Krafton has announced partnerships with are Seoul Auction Blue, XX Blue, and NAVER Z (Zepeto).
Solana Scaling Up For New Partnerships
Recently, Solana has been in the news because of growing concerns over the network’s ability to handle increasing transaction value. Even though Krafton has not disclosed whether it will adapt PUBG or another franchise for its NFT-driven blockchain games on Solana, the popularity of Krafton’s products will not make it any easier for the Solana blockchain. However, in January, the team announced that they were working on certain upgrades to resolve the network’s scaling challenges. Speaking on the partnership, the Head of Games Business Development at Solana Labs, Johnny Lee, said,
“We’re excited by KRAFTON’s commitment to build the future of gaming on Solana. KRAFTON is an established innovator in the games industry and we are excited to be part of their next level up. We are seeing gamers increasingly seek out on-chain games and gaming companies who respond quickly to this demand will set themselves up well for ongoing success.”
