The two billionaires have partnered up to launch The Bitcoin Academy, a Bitcoin and crypto education program in Brooklyn, New York.
The Bitcoin Academy Comes To Brooklyn Projects
Billionaire rapper Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey have teamed up to fund The Bitcoin Academy. Under the program, the residents of the Marcy Houses will receive free-of-cost education on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. The Marcy or the Marcy Project is a public housing complex built in Brooklyn, New York, which is where Jay-Z grew up. However, the program is expected to expand beyond the Brooklyn projects and provide free crypto education to other neighborhoods soon.
According to The Bitcoin Academy website,
“The vision for Bitcoin is that it doesn’t have barriers, but lack of access to financial education is a barrier. It’s still hard to use for everyday necessities. Plus, people need devices and data plans. This program aims to provide education, empower the community with knowledge, and get rid of some of the barriers so that residents can learn more about Bitcoin specifically and finance in general.”
Teams Behind The Bitcoin Academy
The collaboration also included two prominent cryptocurrency-focused companies, Crypto Blockchain Plug and Black Bitcoin Billionaire. Crypto Blockchain Plug is known for hosting countless classes, talks, and events for crypto-enthusiasts in the neighborhood, while Black Bitcoin Billionaire is a platform that encourages members to invest in cryptocurrency through membership programs and educational dialogue. Both Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey have contributed personally to the initiative. It has also received support from Dorsey’s company, Block Inc. (formerly Square) and the Shawn Carter Foundation.
What Is Being Offered?
Under the program, free crypto educational classes will be offered exclusively to Marcy residents, both online and in-person, from June 22 to September 7. Dinner will also be served for the in-person classes, which will take place twice a week. In addition, participants will receive MiFi devices with a one-year limited data plan, along with smartphones if needed, all of which they get to keep. The academy will also offer separate “Crypto Kids Camp” classes twice a month to help educate the kids and teens living in the projects in blockchain tech and cryptocurrency. The classes would be led by two instructors. One of them is Crypto Blockchain Plug’s Najah J. Roberts, a crypto expert, motivational speaker, and founder of the country’s first African-American and woman-owned crypto exchange and education center. The other instructor is the Founder and CEO of the Black Bitcoin Billionaire, Lamar Wilson.
