6G is a cellular network that uses cognitive technologies, including AI, to offer low-latency, high-speed communications much faster than the current 5G technology. According to experts ‘ estimates, this standard is set to commence deployment in a few years, and by the end of the decade, it will have replaced 5G as the global communication standard.
IOTA, ever a pioneer in the latest technology, is shaping up to be the network that underpins 6G.
How IOTA is Shaping 6G
One fundamental tenet of 6G is that it will move from centralized chokeholds to distributed channels. This will demand federated learning, a technique under which involved participants can build a standard machine model without sharing their data.
Despite all the benefits, federated learning faces the challenge of a lack of trust as data isn’t shared. So, how can participants engage in secure sharing while ensuring the model’s accuracy? The solution is DLT.
As patent CN117176593A notes, DLT “can establish collaborative trust between network entities, promote efficient resource sharing, trusted data interaction, and secure access control in wireless networks. Privacy protection, data tracking, identity authentication and information supervision provide a new evolution direction for the security system of 6G networks.”
But blockchain, in general, isn’t the solution. It lacks two critical components—an off-chain settlement mode and multi-chain sharding.
Patent CN117176593A solves the challenge by presenting a method that leverages a main chain and shard chains to build a hierarchical federated learning network architecture, adopting an improved IOTA consensus algorithm. The improvements would include changing the PoW once data is uploaded to the model propagation process.
The patent filing adds:
When the node receives a new model that needs to be uploaded, the model is evaluated, and the evaluation results are in line with the prediction. The required model is placed on the local IOTA database and transmitted to adjacent nodes, and models whose evaluation results do not meet the preset requirements are discarded.
This would prevent spam on IOTA and improve the model’s reliability while fortifying its security.
