The Uniswap Foundation has announced that the highly anticipated Uniswap v4 upgrade will launch in Q3 2024.

The draft code for Uniswap v4 was revealed in June 2023, with the codebase now set to undergo a rigorous auditing process.

Tentative Date For Uniswap v4

The Uniswap Foundation made the announcement via its official handle on the social media platform X. Uniswap v4 will leverage Ethereum’s upcoming Dencun upgrade and implement key features from Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), specifically EIP-4788, EIP-1153, and EIP-4844. This will help enable enhanced functionality and efficiency for Uniswap.

“Now that the launch of Dencun on Mainnet has been scheduled for March 2024, we’re excited to provide an update to the community! Uniswap v4’s launch is tentatively set for Q3 2024. From community-built Hooks to events to Twitter Spaces, the momentum for v4 has been growing!”

Introducing “hooks”

One key feature set to be implemented once Uniswa v4 has been deployed is the concept of hooks. Hooks allows the injection of custom logic at specifically designated points for pools, swaps, fees, and other LP positions. They also enable dynamic adjustments and open up a wider range of use cases for smart contracts. The concept of Hooks was introduced in June 2023, when the Uniswap Foundation first showcased the draft for v4.

According to developers, Hooks can potentially provide lower fees and better asset management for end users.

Leveraging Dencun

Developers also revealed that Uniswap v4 is aligned with Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade, particularly with EIP-1153. EIP-1153 enables transient storage, a functionality that allows developers to build out optimizations for smart contracts and reduce gas fees through a method called flash accounting. Uniswap has stated that the v4 code base will undergo extensive and rigorous auditing processes to make it “the most rigorously audited code ever deployed on Ethereum.

“At the same time, we believe v4 should be the most rigorously audited code ever deployed on Ethereum—the roadmap below reflects a comprehensive plan to ensure this.”

Roadmap

The launch roadmap highlights three main phases leading up to the launch. Phase 1 is currently in progress, consisting of core code completion, testing, gas optimizations, security enhancements, and finalizing the periphery. Phase 2 will see comprehensive auditing of the code base conducted by multiple audit firms and a commodity audit contest. This phase will also see v4 deployed on the testnet, with final adjustments being made to the code. Phase 3 will see v4 being pushed to the mainnet.
