With more than 40.708 billion XRP held in escrow accounts, there has been considerable interest within the community about the potential burning of these reserves.

Schwartz outlined how Ripple will achieve the effect of burning escrows by “blackholing” the associated accounts. He elaborated on Ripple’s capacity to take unilateral measures to prevent XRP from these escrows from entering circulation. Thus, it would effectively render the associated accounts inaccessible.
