University of Bologna Unveils DIVA: VANET Project Leveraging DAG and IOTA for Enhanced Vehicle Communication

According to a recent research paper, the University of Bologna has unveiled DIVA, a pioneering project leveraging Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs) for Vehicular Ad-hoc NETworks (VANETs). By enabling the safe transmission of vital road-related data, this novel project promises to transform Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and represent a major advancement toward safer roads throughout the world.

The recent announcement introduces DIVA, a project to bolster trust in VANETs by integrating Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) and IOTA technologies. They are driven by the need to enhance overall traffic safety and facilitate the sharing of road-related messages. Through this project, VANETs are gaining popularity. Additionally, DIVA aims to satisfy this growing demand by concentrating on secure vehicle communication.

The widespread use of VANETs has brought about various security issues, including worries about privacy and message validity. By putting forth a reputation system based on Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and utilizing DLTs to guarantee the reliability of transmitted data, DIVA takes on these problems head-on. Through a reputation system based on DLTs, DIVA provides a strong means of detecting and thwarting bad messages, strengthening the security of VANET communications.

Ensuring Standard Compliance and Compatibility

One of DIVA’s standout features is that it follows the rules, especially those set by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Through the use of the ETSI-mandated message format, DIVA guarantees complete conformance with new road infrastructures and permits easy integration into current VANET setups. Within the VANET research community, this commitment to standards improves interoperability and opens the door for broad deployment.

Extensive studies were carried out by researchers using an ETSI-compliant communication dataset that included both safety and non-safety messages transferred between cars to validate the effectiveness of DIVA.  The results showed how well DIVA performed in detecting fraudulent contributions in various scenarios, with an accuracy rate of almost 90%. DIVA’s implementation is publicly available to the research community, allowing for additional investigation and comparison in this important area.

In order to guarantee the accuracy and dependability of data transferred via VANETs, the DIVA project represents a major advancement that will lead to improved traffic control and safer roadways. DIVA has the potential to transform vehicular communication completely and bring in road safety due to its compliance with ETSI standards and strong performance, as proven in practical scenarios.
